How it first started

David & Joy Young of Somerford, Congleton decided to use their knowledge of home milling and mixing cereals to benefit their interest in all things equine. Their own dressage horses required a good quality source of roughage in their diet. In 1977 Super Molichop was formulated and launched. Initially produced in a static form of a mobile mill, sales grew quickly of this innovative product and to keep up with demand an new more efficient plant with automatic packer was added in 1992. Around this time Super Molichop Herbi and a Low Sugar Chaff were added to the range.

David & Joy retired in 2001, the business was taken over by coarse ration specialists Dollin & Morris Ltd of Standon Mill, Staffordshire.

The Next Step

With the valuable experience and research of Dr Merial Moore-Colyer of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth a further 3 products were added Shreddi, Lite and Bloom in 2003.

During 2006 a new fibre mill was constructed at Standon in Staffordshire which is now one of the most modern mills of it’s type in the UK. Quality and consistency are of utmost importance. All raw materials are carefully selected from reputable growers and suppliers. Only barn stored straw is used with a maximum moisture content of 14%.

All straw and alfalfa is then chopped to the optimum length which has been proven to maximise chewing to ensure the efficiency of the digestive process. Following the chopping process the straw is then blown through a dust extraction system, it is then passed into silos to cool to prevent mould spores from forming.

Next it can be blended with oils, molasses and a low sugar flavouring as required before being conveyed to a gentle action mixer to allow any additional products to be blended homogenously to produce a light open chaff.
